Pakistan have never defeated India in an ODI World Cup. This was their first clash in the World Cup's history.
The match took place in Sydney on the 4th of March 1992. India won the toss and elected to bat first.
Ajay Jadeja and Kris Srikkanth opened the batting for India. Albeit India's nervous and slow start, Pakistan were left wicketless for 9 overs, but at the score of 25, Srikkanth was caught behind the stumps of the bowling of a player who has always performed against India - Aqib Javed. Came in Mohammad Azharudddin who along with Jadeja made a partnership of 61 runs before being caught behind by Moin Khan off the bowling of leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. In the same over both Jadeja and Azhar hit him for a boundary each by coming down the pitch. Jadeja hit some handsome shots to reach close to his half century but gave a catch to mid wicket fielder Zahid Fazal. In came the prodigy Sachin tendulkar who was largely responsible for the rest of the scoring. Kambli scored 24, Manjrekar was out first ball. Then came the partnership India was looking for bewteen Sachin and Kapil to take India past 200. Kapil played an aggressive innings of 35 of only 26 balls but was out in the 48th over at mid wicket by Imran Khan and Aqib Stuck once again. India could manage only 216 runs.
Due to slow over rate of Pakistan, the match was reduced to 49 overs.
Pakistan started in a similar fashion as India and lost Inzamam early in the 3rd over. He was struck on his pads and kapil provided the break through India needed. Before Pakistan could recover from the early loss, Prabhakar struck another one in the form of young Zahid fazal and Pakistan were now 17/2.
No success came India's way as Javed Miandad and Aamir Sohail whipped some serious stuff out of Srinath. Then came something which was to become one of the hallmarks of India Pakistan cricket rivalry. The famous Javed Miandad jumps imitating a monkey after repeated appeals from the keeper Kiran More of tendulkar's bowling.
The game was evenly matched but Pakistan lost Aamir Sohail at the score of 105. Sohail was well settled but lost his calm and Srikkanth took a low catch at mid wicket. Tendulkar got his man. dding 22 more runs to the tally, Prabhakar struck once again and Saleem Malik. Imran Khan couldn't score a run and was run out as he ran for a virtuallyimpossible single. Then came Wasim Akram but could only manage 4 runs. Pressue mounted on Pakistan and they succumbed to it and their last hope faded in the form of Miandad's wicket.
Pakistan lost the match by 43 runs.
